Mississippi Valley Testimonials

Gary was admitted to MVHRC in August of 2022 from a hospital in Illinois. Prior to Gary admitting, he had numerous heart attacks; ultimately leaving him in a medically induced coma and requiring ventilator dependence.

Upon admission, he required extensive assistance with all functional mobility, significant wound care resulting in a wound vac placement, a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC access) and struggled with feelings of defeat. With the help of many staff members at Mississippi Valley Healthcare, Gary is now weaned down from requiring 24 hours a day mechanical ventilation, to now only needing it at night, and is expected to return home soon!! When asked how Gary’s experience has been since being a resident at MVHRC, he stated,

“Prior to admitting I had given up. I was the sickest I had ever been, extremely weak and scared. I felt it was the end of my road, I thought I was going to die. Once I came to MVHRC, that is where the magic happened and the healing began. It’s the people here; they never gave up on me, even when I wanted to give up on myself. From the housekeepers to the doctors, they all pushed me. My wounds are healing, I no longer have a PICC line, my trach is capped during the day, and I was able to return home .Miracles truly happen here.”

Bryan was admitted to Mississippi Valley Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in September of 2016 and discharged in April of 2017. Here is what he has to say about his stay at Mississippi Valley:

“For years I battled with sores all over my body and was ventilator dependent. Once I got to Mississippi Valley, the nursing staff begun to heal my sores and the respiratory department helped me to slowly wean off of the ventilator where I only required it at night. The staff didn’t stop there, the respiratory therapists continued to work with me until I no longer needed the ventilator at all. I loved it there and everyone was wonderful. I received great care and the food was great too! They worked hard with me until I was off of the ventilator and ready to return to my home town. The staff at  Mississippi Valley will give you a chance to make your goals, their own!”

Joyce admitted to Mississippi Valley Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in September of 2016. Here is what Joyce has to say about her stay:

“For the whole of 2016, I have been either in the hospital or a nursing home. When the Lord led me to Mississippi Valley, I did not want to go. When I arrived, I was bed ridden, bound to a wheel chair and on a ventilator because my CO2 levels were too high and I went into a coma.

Since my time at Mississippi Valley, I have achieved so much. I thank God, every day for sending me to Mississippi Valley as I am no longer bed ridden or bound to a wheel chair. I can now walk with assistance. Mississippi Valley’s therapy department has worked with me diligently until I was able to walk again.

Respiratory therapy has a great staff and pay close attention to my ventilator to keep my rate of breathing to where each week I was able to come off the machine more and more. The machine is now no longer breathing for me and now I am breathing on my own and no longer need to use the ventilator at all. This is all due to the team effort of the Respiratory department, the nurses and C.N.A.’s that care for me by getting my medicine to me on time and taking time to do my treatments. The C.N.A.’s answer my call-light in a timely fashion to take care of my needs. I would just like to public to know that if it was not for Mississippi Valley, I would probably still be in a wheel chair and on a ventilator.

The activity staff here has tried to get me to get involved with different activities but I really didn’t want to. They knew it would be good for me to get out of my room more so they kept on trying. I decided to try bingo and the different crafts. They helped me become more social and now, I really enjoy being with other residents and other activities like bible study.

This is one of the best nursing homes that I have ever been in and I know this because I have been in two others.

Thanks to Mississippi Valley, I again live on my own in the community.”

Carol was admitted to Mississippi Valley in April of 2015. She was ventilator dependent with a feeding tube and unable to get out of bed by herself. Carol’s goal was to gain strength and return home. Not only did Carol reach her goal, she surpassed it by weaning from the ventilator and her tracheostomy all in two short months. Here is what Carol had to say about her experience at Mississippi Valley:

“I was in bad shape. I was told by my doctors that even if I got stronger and was able to go home, I would always be on a ventilator at night. When I got to Mississippi Valley, it was like a whole new world. I was a little afraid at first but, the staff gave me a lot of attention and love, I could feel my anxiety leaving.

I started working with the physical therapy department. They encouraged me to work harder so I could get stronger. I soon was able to stand with assistance and then take a few steps by myself. I can now walk without my walker! The nurses, therapists, and many others had helped me so much. I am able to eat anything I want and have been completely weaned from the ventilator and my tracheotomy!
Thanks to Mississippi Valley, I am now home with my family!”

Tammey admitted to Mississippi Valley in July of 2014 on a ventilator and barley able to walk. She left in September of 2014 without a ventilator, tracheotomy, or her walker.

Tammey battled with her weight and a heart condition for many years. After losing nearly 400 pounds, she decided to have surgery to remove the excess skin, due to her substantial weight loss. Tammey came out of surgery with more complications than expected, which in turn, placed her on a ventilator.

Tammey has now returned home and has taken her role back as the Assistant walking coach in her community.

“Thankfully, I was sent to Mississippi Valley. I had made more progress in one week at Mississippi Valley than I did months at the previous place I was at.  It was a very positive experience. I don’t feel I would have gotten any better without the staff at Mississippi Valley. The Physical Therapists, Nursing and Respiratory team worked hard to help me reach my goal. I’m still slow, but I’m getting there.”
